Throbbing heartbeats, nail-biting excitement, adrenaline pumping through the veins and the awesome photo finishes… yup, you guessed it right, it’s the formula one races I am talking about. The FIA Formula One World Championship has been the premier form of racing since the inaugural season in 1950 and since then has amassed millions of fans across the globe. The Formula One Grand Prixes are to racing fans what the FIFA world cup is to soccer fans. But the racing world we know is going under a paradigm shift right now.
Formula E and Kinetik announced a partnership in November, 2015 with the intention to launch a global race series for driverless electric cars. This new championship called ‘ROBORACE’ will provide a competitive platform for the autonomous driving solutions that are now being developed by many large industrial automotive and technology players as well as top tech universities.
The plan is for ROBORACE to form part of the support package of the FIA Formula E Championship, with the first race intended to take place during the 2016-2017 season. ROBORACE is aimed to take place prior to each Formula E race, using the same circuits in major cities across the world. Ten teams, each with two driverless cars, will compete in one-hour races over the full championship season. All the teams will have the same cars however will compete using real-time computing algorithms and AI technologies.
With Roborace, Organizers are hoping that the races will attract a younger audience to Motorsports by creating a sci-fi version that just a decade ago would have seemed impossible to pull off. Roboracing is intended to build on that youth appeal. Formula E describes Roborace as “a global platform to show that robotic technologies and artificial intelligence can co-exist with us in real life,” clearly conscious that it’s as much a PR push as a competition. Although the formula e cars will only be operating at around 140 mph as compared to the 200 mph of formula one cars, this doesn’t seem to bother the founders of roborace… they believe that the event will be a huge success and will have a grand reception by racing fans. Also the formula e cars are expected to have greater acceleration and greater precision in maneuvering around the track since they are being programmed to beat human drivers in lap record times.
Well, how the fans receive ROBORACE still remains to be seen, but one thing is sure, this certainly will revolutionize the racing world forever and admit it – all of us want to see these metal beasts rip each other on the racing tracks for glory!
